Too many problem-solving sessions become battlegrounds where decisions are made based on power rather than intelligence.

Working with complex groups Over the past ten years we have been extensively involved with complex groups of people. These groups include:
- multi-party groups in the mining industry (Mine owners, Government and Indigenous groups)
- Industry representative groups that involve many different organisations
- natural resource management groups
What do they have in common? In our view there are two: Firstly, there is frequently a poor common vision for the future, and second is poor governance.
The situation is made worse by the parties being unable to work beyond what is, to the outsider, is their most probable and predictable future.
I am a firm believer, that in our gut, we know exactly what our default future is. Despite not liking it, we often persist in perfecting it!
Webinars We have two coming up which we believe will be of interest and challenging: 1) organisational mental models; and 2) providing good leadership in groups with very differing perspectives.
Book Review Co-incidentally, our first book review for 2010 (The three laws of Performance) provides a profound insights for both organisations and multi-party groups (more below). It is a book I highly recommend to read.
Adventure I am pleased to say that we are participating in two Adventure Challenges this year: the Kokoda Challenge and Larapinta End-to-End (more below).
Enjoy the read.

Our webinars are short one-hour information sessions that you can listen in and ask questions.
Click to RSVP for either Webinar.
March 25: Mental Models in Management In this session, we explore some of the latest thinking from McKinsey and others in what differentiates successful versus less successful thinking in organisations. This session is applicable to business owners and managers regardless of size.
April 15: What does Karpman's Triangle have in common with Multi-party Management? In this webinar, we explore the various roles the parties play: Persecutor, Victim and Rescuer.
Intriguing and confronting - a must for anyone involved in Indigenous negotiations, natural resource management or simply working with diverse groups with significantly differing perspectives.

| Book Review - Three Laws of Performance

In an age where we have commoditised conversations - we consult widely but don’t listen, we ask for input yet make decisions outside of that framework - this is a good book on the relationship between organisational performance and language. It is a must-read and Zaffron and Logan’s approach is to really work the conversations, to turn them upside down and dig beyond the words that are said to get to what’s really going on.
So when the series editor, Warren Bennis, a well known academic, author and business consultant, acknowledges that he was fascinated by Zaffron and Logan's work, we sit up and take notice.
