Welcome

Another year draws to a close providing an opportunity to reflect and celebrate that which has happened and to imagine and plan for achieving the best for 2009.

We have reflected on a selection of our activities of 2008.  Some may have relevance for you in the coming year.

We have also been particularly gratified this year to have the opportunity to coach three groups of CEOs as well as a large number of individual business owners.
Other activities included
:
  •  A major review of the Century Mine Agreement
  • Launch our internal organisational change program in major companies in NSW and QLD.
  • Conduct of at  least one of our public training programs in all States of Australia.
  • Launch our Kokoda trek which was a great success with more exciting walks planned for 2009.
We are pleased to announce a partnership with Chicago-based sales company, Norton-Norris to launch a new sales program in 2009.  This program, 7/8th Selling, will be delivered in Australia and the US.

As a young company, we are humbled by the support we have received from the very wide network: our clients, our suppliers and friends, for making 2008 an excellent year.

For us, it has been a great year and we look forward to making 2009 another significant year, in spite of the global conditions.

Finally, do take time to reflect on the privileged life we have in Australia.  Treasure this, and let us work together to help make it a reality for an even wider group of people.

All of us at TRM wish you and your families a safe and wonderful Festive Season.

Kind regards

David Hanlon and the TRM Team

Gulf Communities Agreement
We had the privilege of reviewing the performance of all parties involved in establishing Century lead and zinc mine in North Queensland.  This project was both challenging and rewarding: it was also a complex and at times a very sensitive undertaking. Whilst the project highlighted the many good things that have been undertaken by all parties, it also highlighted there were many opportunities for the residents of the Gulf to leverage off the Mine.  Pleasing was the unanimous acceptance of our 18 recommendations by all parties to the agreement.

The study has been lauded by Nicholas Rothwell of The Australian as "a report with refreshing candour" whilst David Brereton of The Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining ”was particularly impressed by how the report was written and presented.  It serves as a model for researchers on how to communicate with community and corporate audiences.”

We are very pleased to be involved in the coming year in the delivery of a Young Leaders’ Program in the Gulf.

A Thinking Leaders Walk!
We are pleased to announce that we are introducing this program in 2009.  The programs will be lead by one of the following thought leaders.  They are:

Allan Parker. Allan is well known to many of our clients as a person who combines organisational change with deep personal conversations.  Allan is also a marathon runner and author/co-author of three books: Switch on Your Brain, The Negotiators Toolkit, and Beyond Yes. Allan works internationally with major corporations as well with many private individuals within Australia.

Prof Stuart Hill. Stuart is also well known to many of our clients.  Stuart was the foundation chair of the faculty of Social Ecology at the University of Western Sydney.  He has profound understanding of ecosystems and challenges leaders to deeply examine their relationships and barriers to change.

Numbers in these programs are strictly limited so please register your interest as soon as possible.  If you are interested please contact David Hanlon.

Boot Camp Rules for Tough Times

The attached article is a review of some of the practices and behaviours of successful people in tough times.  This has prompted us to develop 10 rules for successful people to follow and 10 questions to ask yourself.

Courage Endurance Mateship Sacrifice
They walked, they climbed, they sweated, had fun and made it!!

They also walked to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Kokoda is a serious undertaking at a physical, mental and emotional level and for many becomes the foundation for further personal growth. That was certainly the case for the group that will always be known now as the first TRM Kokoda Walkers!   Special mention is required of the two award winners.

  • David Mailler - John Metsen Award (for outstanding endurance and courage on the walk)
  • Greg Flynn - Bruce Kingsbury (VC) Award (for displaying the attributes of the ANZAC spirit)
Our special thanks to John Miles and his team at Executive Excellence for their professionalism, friendship and organisation.

If you are interested in walking Kokoda in 2009 with TRM please contact Jill Rigney for details.

Five Minds for the Future
For many of us there are vast changes taking place at a personal, local, business, social and and global level with increasing quantities of information to manage. As a result there is a need for new ways of learning and thinking in school, business and the professions. In Five Minds for the Future, noted psychologist Howard Gardiner defines the cognitive abilities that will command a premium in the years to come:
  • the disciplinary mind
  • the synthesising mind
  • the creating mind
  • the respectful mind
  • the ethical mind
Without an understanding and ability to manage these "minds", individuals will potentially be at the mercy of forces they can't understand - overwhelmed by information, unable to succeed in the workplace and incapable of making judicious decisions about personal and professional matters.

TRM Program Update
Power of Engagement
2008 was a great year for our Power of Engagement program with eight public programs.
We have six programs planned for the first half of 2009 so please use our website to register.

Negotiators Toolkit
This popular program is an essential add-on for those who look like having to undertake serious relationship management in  2009.  It builds on the the skills already attained in the Power of Engagement.

Conversations for Growth
This program exceeded our expectations in 2008.  We have programs for family businesses, Catchment Management Authorities and internally within an Emergency Services Department.  We are committed to running these programs regionally so if you are interested in one in your region, please do contact us.

A thought to ponder...

There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life - happiness, freedom and peace of mind - are always attained by giving them to someone else.

Not-for-Profit Support
As part of The Right Mind's social contribution, we invite Not-for-Profit and Charitable Organisations to make contact to see if we can provide support through such things as attending our public training progams, having us conduct in-house staff skilling or assisting in organisational change or strategy.

Again, this year, we are extremely pleased to have partnered with an expanded  number of organisations and we look forward to continuing to provide our voluntary services to this sector during 2009.

Do
contact us if you believe your organisation, or an organisation you are associated with, would benefit from this type of support.
