With the global recession seemingly past we are noticing CEOs and Senior Managers seriously looking at re-investing in their people. Much of the trimming has been completed and new, leaner workforces have emerged. We are seeing three themes with leading businesses. These are:

1. A refocus on customer needs rather than the traditional peddling of products
2. Developing team leader capacity to engage and maximise team productivity rather than simply hiring more people
3. A shifting of the organisational culture to reflect a renewed respect for risk.

However, a quick fix is not on the agenda for businesses we have been talking to: they are looking to grow the capability of their teams largely from within. This means selecting the package of knowledge that can be cascaded down from leaders within the organisation rather than sending staff out to external training.

We have frequently been asked to provide clients with a review of what we have been reading. So we have decided to formalize this process and offer our views on books read via separate dedicated e-mail. These reviews are 5-6 pages long enabling you to get the key messages from the book. Will is a Skill

This is the latest book from the team that gave us Crucial Conversations.   Once read, it is not surprising that it became a New York Times Bestseller.  As Stephen Covey says on the back cover, "An instant classic: whether you’re leading change or changing your life, this book delivers."  Indeed I agree.  It is the change management equivalent to Jim Collin's "Good to Great".

In essence, the book provides a sound understanding of the many forces which influence behaviour. As Collins did in "Good to Great", Kerry Patterson and his team study a raft of successful changes in a wide variety of situations. These case studies themselves are fascinating. Perhaps, more interesting is how they take these examples and then put together a very logical model that helps focus efforts to influence change.

Managers and trainers all over the world have focused on how to get the will into their teams. In one of the most revealing and practical processes yet seen, authors Kerry Patterson, et.al, demonstrate the HOW.

Master or slave to technology?

Surveys in this tech-rich, time-poor era we live in, clearly show a disengaged workforce, stressed executives and harried families.

Today, emails, SMSs and mobile calls are a major form of technology addiction.

An AOL survey of 4,000 email users in the United States showed, 46% were “hooked” on email. Nearly 60% of everyone surveyed checked their blackberries in the bathroom, 15% checked it in church, and 11% had hidden the fact that they were checking it, from a spouse or other family member.

More alarming, these addictions cost productivity through shifting through endless material that is not relevant. New York Knowledge Management Advisers, Basex, estimated the cost of lost productivity in the US last year alone to be a staggering $900 billion: simply because we are slaves to technology, unable to implement the appropriate self and organisational disciplines for management of emails

Indigenous Young Leader's Program New
One of our seminal projects this year. This leadership program is being conducted the Gulf region of Queensland, one of Australia’s most disadvantaged. With funding support from the Federal Government, Century Mine and ourselves, young leader’s from the region are tackling leadership topics and tasks with wonderful enthusiasm.

The program has a 5-day induction following a series of 2-day mentoring and on-going development meetings.
