| Welcome to The Right Mind Briefings.
With the end of the financial year approaching many of you are well advanced in your budget preparations and our first review is a checklist on your budget benchmarks. We do encourage you to assess your own benchmarks against this list.
We are pleased to welcome two new groups into Conversations for Growth - our Oganisational Leaders Forum. We now have groups in Queensland and NSW with more planned in the new financial year. These include a regional group for Armidale/Tamworth and one in Victoria.
I was recently asked to prepare a series of talks on Mental Toughness and a summary of that presentation is included in this newsletter. On the subject of toughness, we are absolutely thrilled to be taking a group of clients to Kokoda in September this year - with only a few places left in this trek do contact us if this challenge interests you.
Kind regards
David Hanlon

| When a group of sports psychologists looked at what "mental toughness" was in elite athletes they found it was the ability to develop the psychological edge to cope better with many demands. In simple terms I say it is the ability to perform at our best whatever the conditions. Importantly, mental toughness is not what people do, it is how they react.
In the attached article I suggest 3 rules, 4 strategies and a couple of actions for improving mental toughness.

| As we advance our business analysis and budgeting process, I wonder how many of you are establishing best practice in each of the four business capital areas: financial, human, social and environmental. In our experience, we see good budgeting and reasonably good analysis of financial performance in most businesses. However as we progress along the other 3 areas of capital, we see less and less skill and rigour in both analysis and benchmark establishment. Our global search for best practice benchmarks in each of these areas helps clients establish true targets in their business area.
In the TRM Pillars(click on image above), we refer to each of the components as a "muscle" For each muscle there is an area of primary focus and some higher order measures that provide an indication of current status for that "muscle". In the attached table we have listed some of the common assessment tools that provide sufficient evidence of progress towards targets.

| Allan, a world renowned trainer and author, is working with us to deliver the Switch on Your Brain Again program in Brisbane: it is one that will significantly impact the way you learn and understand. - Switch on Your Brain Again (June 12 & 13). Sound a little esoteric? But stop and think – do you know actually how you do it? Mental flexibility and an agile mind are the current number one competitive advantages available in business, and most of us don't know how to play the game or are not mentally fit enough.

| Fisher and Ury's "Getting to Yes" is one of the early classics. It is a product of the Harvard Negotiation Project and the fact that some 25 years after publication it is still a best seller, attests its relevance.
Fisher and Ury's framework and approaches have influenced many negotiators worldwide. The book is an easy read and its approach makes good sense for families, business and corporations.

| This business networking program has taken off in three areas: government, not-for-profit and family businesses. All members are Senior Managers or Business Owners who have significant responsibility for ensuring the success of their business operations. The uptake is exceeding our expectations so we set about asking partipants why?
"Conversations for Growth is an opportunity to grow in a number of areas. The program is well thought out and I especially like the 2 pillars approach; in particular the concept of building capacity using the 4 forms of energy. Conversations for Growth compares very favourably to other Executive Development programs I have been involved in and as a result I have included another member of my team in the program." Mark Casey
