“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”-Viktor Frankl

| Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor E Frankl
|
| This classic by the great Austrian psychiatrist Viktor Frankl could be described as one of the most important popular books of the 20th century.
It describes Frankl’s horrific journey through the Nazi concentration camps where in the period 1942 to 1945, Frankl was moved between four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished.
Frankl has been an inspiration and mentor to many people. Stephen R Covey in the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” draws heavily on Frankl. Raymond Ackerman (founder of Pick 'n Pay) in “The Four Legs of the Table” talks about how five mentors (Frankl was one of the five) significantly influenced the way Ackerman developed the Pick ‘n Pay model in South Africa.
It is little wonder that a survey conducted by the
Library of Congress and the Book-of-the-Month Club voted this book one of "the ten
most influential books in America." Even if you don't read much I encourage you to get the book or listen to it on you ipod.

| | Goondiwindi in December...
How will I or my organisation benefit from this program? We are often asked this very good question and our reply is invariably the same.
There are three significant benefits:
- the first is that participants will better understand how to manage and engage with themselves to perform exceptionally at any given job or task.
- the second is participants are introduced to practical tools and skills for engaging with other people and multiple parties to ensure the best outcomes are always obtained.
- the third is the delivery of the DEC model which gives participants a reference framework and guide to creating an environment of deep engagement and therefore optimal outcomes for themselves, their teams or their organisation.
For many, the payback from the program comes from a deeper understanding of the HOW in communication. Unfortunately, we take so much for granted that we fail repeatedly to read the signals right in front of us.
But I've told them repeatedly!!!!! I'm sure you've either said or heard the above. Part of the success of this program lies in shifting from the old paradigm of "telling". This involves ensuring the communication is not just efficient but also effective. A large part of the problem lies in failing to acknowledge and then manage the fact that you can't talk people out of the conclusions they are hard wired to make.
By using the disciplines discovered in the Power of Engagement, participants get to beak through situations like this more effectively.
If the only tool I have is a hammer, then I tend to see every problem as a Nail!!! This lovely quote from Abraham Maslow, sums up the importance of having an array of good tools in your communications toolbox. The tools in the Power of Engagement draw on the latest in psychological and management theory to provide practical and down-to-each tools each of us can use with a little practice.
The next program is Goondiwindi in December with Darwin, Toowoomba and Brisbane in early 2011.

| Brisbane to Gold Coast Bike Ride As you know we like to encourage fitness, wellbeing and supporting good causes. Therefore TRM has put together a team of riders to participate in the Brisbane to Gold Coast Ride on Sunday 10 October. This is a great social ride with proceeds going to very worthwhile charities.
Larapinta 2010 A few of us walked the Larapinta Track in
August and we could not have had a better season or time of the year to do it. The wildflowers in the Centre were superb, there was plenty of water and the day-time temperatures at that time of the year made it very pleasant. Although, as you can see from the photo at the beginning, the top of Mt Sonder at sunrise was freezing!!!
A trip like this had the following highlights:
- physically demanding so that each of us experienced a sense of achievement
- the geography of the country, its ancient formations and sheer vastness makes you put life in perspective
- time without mobile phones and constant 'busyness' is a sobering reminder there is more to life
- it gave a sense of connection with the 'why' Frankl talks about in his book
As one participant who has a very successful career said. "It was a moving experience, it changed my
life." Taking the time to have a break from the demands of work and reflect is most important.
To put it in perspective the group walked some 260 km and ascended some 8,000 metres over 14 days!
2011 Adventures Given the interest in our past and current trips we have two planned for 2011 that you may like to join us on. These are:
1. Larapinta End to End (July) 2. Kokoda (September)
If either of these appeal to you please register your interest by clicking on the link below.
