Quote for the festive season
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader."
John Quincy Adams
ImageDear Reader,

Another year comes to an end and as always it is a time to reflect.   The highlight for us was seeing our leadership program, Conversations for Growth®, being a finalist in the Australian Institute of Training and Development's Australian Learning Innovation award.  It was tough competition and we congratulate CGU Insurance, the winner of this award.

For many, the years end brings mixed blessings brought about by two significant events: the GFC and the Drought/Floods.  Both of these events will continue to impact on the Australian economy for some time yet and many of our rural (and farm based clients) have yet to count the impact of the unprecedented wet of the last couple of months.

This month's newsletter includes:

  • "Enough" - A timely review of one of the best books by long-term US Mutual Funds Manager, John Bogle
  • Our acknowledgment of clients who have done great things
  • Trekking adventures to look forward to in 2011

Enjoy the read, have a safe and wonderful festive period and we look forward to being in touch again next year.

Our seasons greetings to you all.

Regards

David Hanlon and the TRM team

Enough: True Measures of Money, Business and Life - John C Bogle
ImageSome books come into your world by accident and this is one of them.  It is a book I picked up while filling in time between meetings because I was fascinated by the Prologue written by Tom Peters who states among other things that this is "Not a great finance book. Not a great business book. A great book. Period."

Throughout his legendary career, John C. Bogle—founder of the Vanguard Mutual Fund Group and creator of the first index mutual fund—has helped investors build wealth the right way and led a tireless campaign to restore common sense to the investment world. Along the way, he's seen how destructive an obsession with financial success can be. Now, with "Enough", he puts this dilemma in perspective.

The table of contents captures the essence of this book:
  • Too Much Cost, Not Enough Value
  • Too Much Speculation, Not Enough Investment
  • Too Much Complexity, Not Enough Simplicity
  • Too Much Counting, Not Enough Trust
  • Too Much Business Conduct, Not Enough Professional Conduct
  • Too Much Salesmanship, Not Enough Stewardship
  • Too Much Management, Not Enough Leadership
  • Too Much Focus on Things, Not Enough Focus on Commitment
  • Too Many Twenty-First Century Values, Not Enough Eighteenth-Century Values
  • Too Much "Success", Not Enough Character

Nolan Meats - Industry Leadership

Image TERRY, MICHAEL & TONY NOLAN
We have had the privilege of knowing this family business for some 20 years.   The Nolan brothers commitment over some five years to achieve what has been termed a "once in a generation cultural change" in the Meat Inspection Framework for exporters has taken substantive courage.  The outcome of having these changes accepted means a $30 million savings to the Federal Government in meat inspection costs alone.
