Food for Thought
"Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. When we really listen to people there is an alternating current, and this recharges us so that we never get tired of each other. We are constantly being re-created.”
Brenda Ueland
ImageDear Reader,

Floods, cyclones and fires have impacted on so many of our clients so we delayed sending the first newsletter for 2011 until now.   To those of you who have been affected personally or business-wise, our heart-felt thoughts are with you.

To provide something of assistance, we have been offering support and planning services to our clients.  If you would like to inquire about this, please give our office a call.

I am pleased again to offer a book review, and an article on the latest in listening and a brief update on our adventure trekking.

Again, I ask you to take a moment to click on the profile update and let us know what email information you wish to receive from us.  We do not wish to send you anything other then that which you want.

All the best for 2011.

Regards

David Hanlon and the TRM team

Why People Fail - Siimon Reynolds
ImageOur book review for this newsletter is by  Siimon Reynolds. Reynolds’s became one of Australia's youngest self-made millionaires and an agency director at the tender age of 21.  This book is an easy read and has some great tips, especially for young and aspiring leaders.

It offers a potpourri of tools and techniques for managing failure, many of which are simple and practical.  The 16 failures include:
* unclear purpose
* destructive thinking
* low productivity
* fixed mindset
* weak energy
* not asking the right questions
* poor presentation skills
* mistaking IQ for EQ
* poor self-image
* not enough thinking
* no daily rituals
* stress

* few relationships
* lack of persistence
* money obsession
* not focusing on strengths

Generational Listening .......

Image Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, shifted the paradigm from time management to energy management.  And Otto Scharma has shifted the paradigm from active to generational listening.  Essential reading for anyone who seriously wants to improve their listening skills.

In this article, David Hanlon and Jill Rigney explore the proposition that many of us have a deep and perhaps unconscious fear of being generative listeners? The irony of this is most of us also have a deep unfulfilled need to be deeply listened to. Read Full Article...

Adventures 2011

Image We privately undertake a number of  walks each year of which we invite clients and friends to join us.  This year we have the following trips planned.
  • Larapinta - July
  • Kokoda - September
  • Ethiopia - November
If you are interested in joining us then please contact us for details.  Please note, these fill quickly as they are small groups.

LARAPINTA END TO END (July)
This track is fast becoming one of the most sought after trekking destinations in Australia.  Yet unknown to many Australians.  We are running this in conjunction with World Expeditions.

KOKODA (September)
Still on your bucket list????   This popular trek is unique in the bringing together adventure, emotion and history.  A great experience.  Once again, we are very pleased to have Executive Excellence to guide us on this program.

ETHIOPIA (November)
In partnership with ICON Adventures, we are excited to add Ethiopia to our itinerary for 2011. Ethiopia was among the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient world. This trek explores a number of these historical sites ancient monolithic monuments (stelae) dating back 5000 years.

The Simien Mountains rank among the most beautiful mountain ranges in Africa. The trip encompasses a variety of wildlife, including large troops of Gelada Baboons and the elusive Simien Wolf.
